Exhaustive list of common foot and ankle problems

  • Achilles tendonitis - is the most common form of injury to the Achilles tendon. The injury generally occurs in people who are active in sporting activities. Basketball, tennis, running, football, soccer, volleyball, and other running and jumping sports are common activities that can lead to Achilles Tendonitis.

  • Adult flatfoot - is a painful, progressive deformity in adults. It results from a gradual stretch (attenuation) of the tibialis posterior tendon and the ligaments that support your foot’s arch. This stretching causes the tendon to lose strength and function.

  • Athlete's foot - is the result of a fungal infection in the skin of the foot. Athlete’s Foot is by far the most common fungal skin infection and can be acute or chronic. Athlete’s Foot is usually caused by dermatophytes and the recurrent form is often associated with fungal infected toenails.

  • Bunions - are usually determined as mild, moderate, or severe. However just because you have a bunion does not necessarily mean you will have pain. Bunions can involve a variety of symptoms. Some develop gradually as a result of the big toe's slow abnormal drifting towards the second toe. Typically resulting from constant rubbing against a shoe, bunion sites can become slightly swollen and red.

  • Corns and Callouses

  • Deformed toenails

  • Diabetic wound care - Diabetes mellitus results in abnormally high blood glucose levels that lead to serious complications. Serious complications that diabetics encounter are diabetic wounds.

  • Hallux limitus - is the stiffness of the big toe joint. Hallux is the medical term for your big toe. Sometimes the stiffness or limited motion only appears when weight is placed on the foot during standing and walking.

  • Hammertoe - is a contraction of the toes because of a muscle imbalance between the tendons on the top and bottom of the toe.

  • Heel pain and / or heel spurs - Pain on the bottom of the heel is the most common form of heel pain. The pain is often worse when first placing weight on the foot. The pain is also evident first thing in the morning or standing up. Sometimes the pain is sharp and searing or feels like a tear at the bottom of the heel.

  • Ingrown toenails

  • Metatarsal stress fracture - When excessive stress is placed upon the ball of the foot, a hairline fracture of one of the long metatarsal bones may occur.

  • Neuroma - is the swelling of a nerve as a result of a compression trauma, often described as foot tumors though they are not actually a tumor in the purest sense. Neuromas are usually found in the ball of the foot and can lead to permanent nerve damage if not properly treated

  • Plantar Fasciitis - is a thick, fibrous ligament in the arch of the foot. This ligament attaches into the heel bone and fans out towards the ball of the foot and attaches to the base of the toes. It acts as a shock absorber while walking and stretches as the foot flattens.

  • Sesamoiditis - sesamoid bones can fracture and the tendons surrounding the sesamoids can become irritated or inflamed. This is called sesamoiditis, which is a form of tendonitis.
